Years volunteering at O.A.T.S.: Six (certified in 2007)

Involved with O.A.T.S. because: I met Beth (Pellerito) at the salon where I work and she told me about O.A.T.S. After a visit, I was hooked!

Became an instructor because: I saw there was a need for instructors, and I was seeking an activity that involved children and animals. What I like best about being an instructor is seeing the riders improve—and the smiles on their faces!

Personal: I have worked as a hairdresser for 15 years. I’m married with two children and three dogs.

Years volunteering at O.A.T.S.: Three (certified in 2007)

Involved with O.A.T.S. because: Read about the program in the Oakland Press.

Became an instructor because: I  saw Nancy  had  a  severe  shortage,  plus  she asked  me  if  I'd  consider it.  I  enjoy it  because  I  can  see many  of  the kids  responding in  a  positive  way to  being  on the  horse and  trying  to  learn (as  best  they  can)  how  to  do  what  I  ask  of  them.  In addition,  I just  enjoy  being  with horses,  especially those  who are helping  people.

Personal: I  also  volunteer  at  Horses' Haven--they  take in  abused  and  abandoned horses.  I  coordinate  having  groups of  developmentally challenged  people  out  to HH  to interact  with the horses  in  the  summer.

Years volunteering at O.A.T.S.: Eight (certified in 2002)

Involved with O.A.T.S. because: Therapeutic riding gives me the chance to get my horse “fix” and is a great source of joy in my life. Being able to share my love of horses, while seeing the benefits that it brings the riders is an incredible reward. I was honored to be appointed president of the O.A.T.S. board of directors in 2006.

Personal: I’ve loved horses all my life and have been involved with them since 1979, riding, showing, training and instructing. I was a member of the MSU Equestrian Team, and graduated with a degree in Communications, minoring in Animal Science and Pre-Veterinary studies. I worked in small animal and equine veterinary hospitals for more than 10 years. I first became involved with therapeutic riding in the 1980s at John F. Ivory Farm; in 1998, I joined Freedom Ride, a NARHA start-up in Florida, and helped grow the program. Outside of O.A.T.S., I am busy raising two adorable little boys (Zachary and Matthew) with the help of husband Kirk.  I work as the Operations Director for a healthcare consulting firm as well.
